Key Functions:

  1. Frame specification (aluminum, steel, wood types)

  2. Jamb details (depth, returns, reveals)

  3. Sill configuration (sloped, drip edge, drainage)

  4. Head details (lintel cover, flashing)

  5. Installation notes (anchoring, shimming, caulking)

  6. Accessory scheduling (frames, hardware, sealants)

User Need

  • Complete opening details (beyond rough opening dimensions)

  • Frame coordination (ensure frame fits opening)

  • Weatherproofing (sealants, flashing, drainage)

  • Installation specs (for field crews)

  • Material takeoffs (window/door schedules)

Typical Workflow

1. User has created opening in wall_dlg
2. User clicks detail button on opening
3. wd_dlg opens for selected opening
4. User specifies frame:
   • Type: Aluminum storefront
   • Profile: 2" x 4.5" system
   • Finish: Dark bronze anodized
   • Glazing: 1" insulated glass
5. User configures jamb:
   • Reveal depth: 1" (shadow line)
   • Return: Chamfered 1/2"
   • Frame anchor: Through-bolt every 24"
6. User details sill:
   • Slope: 15° outward (water runoff)
   • Drip edge: 1/2" projection
   • Weep holes: 3/8" @ 24" o.c.
   • Sealant: Polyurethane 1/2" joint
7. User adds head detail:
   • Lintel cover: 1" reveal matches jambs
   • Flashing: Membrane over lintel
   • Sealant joint: 1/2" at top
8. User clicks OK
9. Detailed section views generated
10. Window schedule updated with specifications

Control Semantics

Frame Specification

Frame Type:

  • frame_type - Type dropdown:

    • Aluminum storefront (commercial)

    • Aluminum curtain wall (high-rise)

    • Steel (industrial, security)

    • Wood (residential, historic)

    • Vinyl (residential, economical)

    • None (blank-out, infill later)

Frame Profile:

  • profile - System specification:

    • 2” × 4” (standard storefront)

    • 2.5” × 6” (curtain wall)

    • Custom profile entry

  • finish - Surface finish:

    • Anodized (clear, bronze, black)

    • Painted (color specification)

    • Mill finish (uncoated)

Jamb Details

Jamb Configuration:

  • jamb_reveal - Reveal depth (0”-3”):

    • 0” = Flush (no reveal)

    • 1” = Standard (shadow line)

    • 2” = Deep (strong shadow)

  • jamb_return - Edge treatment:

    • Square (perpendicular cut)

    • Chamfered (45° bevel)

    • Rounded (radius corner)

  • jamb_anchor - Frame attachment:

    • Through-bolts (strongest)

    • Expansion anchors (retrofit)

    • Welded clips (steel frames)

    • Spacing: 16”-24” o.c. typical

Sill Details

Sill Configuration:

  • sill_slope - Slope angle:

    • 10-15° typical (water runoff)

    • Minimum 5° (code)

  • sill_drip - Drip edge projection:

    • 1/2”-1” (breaks water surface tension)

    • With drip groove on underside

  • sill_weep - Weep hole pattern:

    • 3/8”-1/2” diameter

    • 24”-32” o.c. spacing

    • Drain to exterior

Sill Materials:

  • sill_material - Material options:

    • Precast concrete (integral with panel)

    • Stone (granite, limestone)

    • Metal (aluminum, steel)

    • Composite (manufactured sill)

Head Details

Header Configuration:

  • head_reveal - Reveal (matches jambs typically)

  • head_flashing - Flashing type:

    • Membrane (peel-and-stick)

    • Metal (aluminum, steel)

    • Through-wall (full coverage)

  • head_sealant - Sealant joint:

    • Width: 1/2”-3/4”

    • Type: Polyurethane (most common)

    • Backer rod: Closed-cell foam

Glazing (if window)

Glass Specification:

  • glaz_type - Glazing:

    • Single pane (minimal)

    • Insulated (1” double-pane)

    • Low-E (energy efficient)

    • Laminated (safety, security)

    • Tempered (safety, required by code in some locations)

  • glaz_tint - Glass tint:

    • Clear

    • Bronze

    • Gray

    • Reflective

Installation Details

Anchor Spacing

Frame Attachment:

Typical anchor spacing:
- Through-bolts: 24" o.c. maximum
- Expansion anchors: 18" o.c.
- Corners: Within 4"-6" of corners

Wind load areas:
- Reduce spacing to 16"-18" o.c.
- Increase anchor size (#10 vs #8)

Edge distance:
- Minimum 3" from panel edges
- Avoid rebar conflicts

Sealant Joints

Joint Sizing:

Width-to-Depth Ratio:
Ideal: 2:1 (width:depth)
Example: 1/2" wide joint ? 1/4" deep

Joint width sizing:
Movement: ±25% (standard)
1/2" joint accommodates: ±1/8" movement

Backer rod:
- Closed-cell foam
- Diameter = joint width + 25%
- Supports sealant, controls depth

Flashing Details

Head Flashing:

Purpose: Prevent water from entering at lintel
Extend: 6" beyond opening each side
Slope: Outward toward exterior (water runoff)
Seal: At panel face and frame top

Through-wall flashing:
- Full width of opening + 12"
- Turned up at jambs 6"
- Laps with membrane system

User Example

Scenario: 4’×6’ aluminum storefront window

1. Opening: 4'×6' in wall panel
2. Frame: Aluminum storefront, 2"×4" profile, dark bronze
3. Jambs:
   • Reveal: 1" (creates shadow line)
   • Return: 1/2" chamfer
   • Anchors: 1/2" expansion bolts @ 24" o.c.
4. Sill:
   • Slope: 15° outward
   • Drip edge: 1" projection with 1/4" groove
   • Weeps: 3/8" @ 24" o.c.
   • Sealant: Polyurethane, 1/2" joint
5. Head:
   • Reveal: 1" (matches jambs)
   • Flashing: Membrane, extends 6" each side
   • Sealant: 1/2" joint with backer rod
6. Glazing: 1" insulated glass, Low-E, clear
7. Result: Fully detailed window opening with installation specs

Integration

Called By:

  • wall_dlg ? Detail button on opening

  • Opening schedule ? Detail specifications

Generates:

  • Section detail drawings (jamb, sill, head)

  • Window schedule with full specifications

  • Installation instructions for field

Variables:

  • Linked to opening ID in wall_dlg

  • Stored with panel data

  • Referenced in drawing generation

Best Practices

Frame Coordination:

  • ? Specify frame type early (affects rough opening size)

  • ? Coordinate with architect (finish, color)

  • ? Verify frame delivery schedule (critical path)

Weatherproofing:

  • ? Always slope sills outward (minimum 5°)

  • ? Use drip edges on sills (prevent staining)

  • ? Flash all head details (water intrusion prevention)

  • ? Weep holes at sills (drain cavity water)

Detailing:

  • ? Match reveals (jambs, head consistent appearance)

  • ? Adequate sealant joints (1/2” minimum width)

  • ? Backer rod in all joints (proper sealant depth)

  • ? Anchor spacing per wind loads (closer in high-wind zones)
