122 — Change Project Folder Location

A ConstructiVision project lives in one folder, and the folder’s name is the project’s name on disk: in Tutorial 1 the folder Riverside Distribution Center gets a project file called Riverside Distribution Center.cvp. Change Project Folder Location is for when that folder is in the wrong place, or has the wrong name. It points the project at the new folder and writes the project file there under the new name. It does not move your drawings: you move them yourself in Windows Explorer, and the command tells you how many to move and where.

Where it is

  • Toolbar: the ConstructiVision toolbar, third button — Change Project Folder Location, between Project Details and Open Drawing. The icon is a yellow folder. The tooltip reads: “Rename the project or move its folder (reopens the name/location dialog)”.

  • Menu: on the ConstructiVision menu.

  • Typed command: CV-PROJECT-FOLDER

It is a different button from Project Details. Project Details edits the job information that prints on the sheets; this one deals with the folder.

What it opens

The button opens the ConstructiVision – New Project dialog, filled in with the project you are in. When this lesson was checked (release 12.21.197), with a panel drawing open in a project folder named CV3396 Scratch, it showed:

  • Please enter the name of your new Project: CV3396 Scratch – the project’s own name.

  • The project’s folder is below. Edit the name or path to point it at another folder: the project’s own folder, ending in \CV3396 Scratch.

  • A Browse… button beside the path.

  • OK uses this folder (made if missing). Drawings stay put.

  • OK, Cancel and Help.

On Riverside Distribution Center the name and the folder are Riverside Distribution Center.

Cancel closes the dialog and changes nothing.

What OK does

OK creates the new folder if it is missing, points the project at it, and writes the project file there under the new name. It moves no file. When this lesson was checked (release 12.21.197), RDC012.dwg was open in the Riverside Distribution Center project, the name was changed to Riverside DC Renamed, and OK was pressed. The command line read (press F2 to see all of it):

[CSV] project folder created: ...\Riverside DC Renamed\
[CSV] project folder now: ...\Riverside DC Renamed\
[CSV] 2 drawing(s) stay in ...\Riverside Distribution Center\ -- Change Project Folder Location moves no file. To finish the move, close them and move them into ...\Riverside DC Renamed\ in Windows Explorer.
[CSV-ERROR] pdvar not defined -- run (convert "panel") first
[CV-WCX] catalog resolved from NOD (12 types)
[CV-WCX] new project seeded with 12 WC types (session only -- no wcl.txt written, CV-1885)
[CV-WCX] catalog resolved from NOD (12 types)
[CV-CVP] live project written: ...\Riverside DC Renamed\Riverside DC Renamed.cvp (12 WC types, 0 panels)

and the folders afterwards held:

folder

files

Riverside DC Renamed

Riverside DC Renamed.cvp only

Riverside Distribution Center

RDC001.dwg, RDC012.dwg, Riverside Distribution Center.cvp – unchanged

Note

The [CSV-ERROR] pdvar not defined line is a false error on release 12.21.197 (CV-3413). It prints after every rename, and the rename has already finished when it does: the folder, the project file and the “stay in” line above are all correct. You do not need to run anything it suggests.

The new project file lists no panels yet because the drawings are still in the old folder. To finish, close the drawings in AutoCAD and move them into the new folder in Windows Explorer, as the line above says and the next section shows.

Try it on Riverside Distribution Center

  1. Open a panel drawing from your Riverside Distribution Center project, for example RDC012.dwg.

  2. Click Change Project Folder Location, or type CV-PROJECT-FOLDER.

  3. The ConstructiVision – New Project dialog opens with the project’s name and folder, as above.

  4. Click Cancel to leave the project as it is. To rename it instead, type the new name and click OK, then move the drawings the command line names into the new folder in Windows Explorer.

Moving or copying a project folder yourself

The drawings themselves are moved or copied in Windows. ConstructiVision treats the two differently: a moved panel is still the panel you licensed, while a copy is a new panel.

Moved — the old folder is gone. The panels keep their licences. When this lesson was checked, two licensed Arlington Airport A panels, AAA005 and AAA006, were kept in a project whose project file still named a folder that no longer existed. A Standard Opening change made to both from the site drawing went through with no licence refusal and no token spent:

[CV-EDIT] 2 of 2 panel(s) updated.

Copied — the original is still there. The copy is marked, and its panels are licensed on their own:

  • The Projects window lists both folders and marks the copy COPY of Riverside Distribution Center in its Note column.

  • A copied panel drawing (TP08-12 - Copy.dwg) showed Copy - 0 tokens, OK refused in Main Panel at a zero token balance, and its OK was refused with “the copied licence was removed; this panel is licensed on its own” — nothing was drawn or saved.

  • CV Plot will not print a copy of a licensed panel until the copy is licensed as a panel of its own, and that holds in a project folder that was moved or copied to another place (release notes, CV 12.17.144).

The name on the sheets is a separate setting

The project name that prints in each panel’s title block comes from Project Details, not from the folder. When this lesson was checked, a project created with the Project Name K171 Display Name in a folder named K171-FOLDER printed K171 Display Name in the title block, kept one project file named for the folder (K171-FOLDER.cvp), and repainted the title when the name was changed in Project Details.

So to change only the name printed on the drawings, use Project Details (Tutorial 1, Step 7). Use this button for the folder.

What this lesson does not cover

  • Moving the drawings themselves. The button moves no file; Windows Explorer does, as above.

  • Finding a project ConstructiVision does not see — the Add a folder… button in Projects.

Watch the lesson

The video renames Riverside Distribution Center to Riverside DC Renamed and opens the command history with F2 to show the lines above, including the false [CSV-ERROR] line. It does not show moving the drawings in Windows Explorer.
