126 — Lintel Details

A lintel, or corbel, is a thickening of the panel wall above the bottom of the panel: a band of extra concrete that stands proud of the face. Lintel Details places one by its distance from a side of the panel, the elevation of its bottom, its width, its height and its thickness.

This is not the Pilaster / Lintel dialog. The toolbar has two buttons side by side, and they open two different dialogs:

Lessons 32 and 33 reach a lintel through Pilaster / Lintel Details. This lesson covers the separate Lintel Details button only.

Where it is

ConstructiVision toolbar → Lintel Details (tooltip: Lintel Details), immediately to the right of Pilaster / Lintel and left of Spandrel Seat. The button runs CV-FEAT-LINTEL.

Open a panel drawing first. The dialog’s top line reads (Distance from side of Panel to nearest side of Lintel) (Elevation from Finished Floor to bottom of Lintel).

A row’s fields stay greyed until you tick its Enable box. The buttons along the bottom are Calc, OK, Cancel and Help.

None of the sample panels opened for this lesson carries a Lintel Details row. On AAA039, CSB001, CSB060, ODE038, SegalP15041 and Water048 the dialog opens with every Enable box clear.

Try it on AAA039

AAA039 is a panel from the Arlington Airport A sample project, 28’-0” wide and 7 1/4” thick.

  1. Open AAA039.dwg.

  2. Click Lintel Details. All three rows are clear: L, 10'-0", 10'-0", 10'-0", 1'-0", 8", all greyed.

  3. Tick Enable on row 1. Leave From on L.

  4. Distance 5'-4", Tab.

  5. Elevation 12'-7", Tab.

  6. Width 8'-6", Tab.

  7. Height 1'-5", Tab.

  8. Thickness 9", Tab.

  9. Click OK. The command line reads:

[CV-FEAT] Lintel Details accepted -- redrawing panel...

    and the panel redraws.

What you see

On the redrawn sheet:

  • A hatched band (a dotted hatch on layer solid) from 5’-4” to 13’-10” across the panel and from 12’-7” to 14’-0” up it: exactly the distance, elevation, width and height you typed.

  • The label T + 9" inside the band: panel thickness plus the 9” you entered.

  • Elevation callouts 12'-7" and 14'-0" at the left of the panel, for the bottom and top of the lintel.

  • Dimensions of 5’-4” (to the lintel) and 8’-6” (its width) below the panel.

  • The title block goes up. When this lesson was checked it read 109.3 KIPS / 27.0 Cu. Yd. before this OK and 110.7 KIPS / 27.3 Cu. Yd. after it. The 0.3 Cu. Yd. added is the lintel itself: 8’-6” x 1’-5” x 9”.

Save the drawing, close it and open it again, then click Lintel Details. Row 1 is still ticked, From L, with 5'-4", 12'-7", 8'-6", 1'-5" and 9". Click Cancel and the command line reads:

[CV-FEAT] Lintel Details cancelled -- nothing changed.

The 1 Form phase button includes lintels (its tooltip lists … pilasters, lintels, spandrel seats, chamfer).

What this lesson does not cover

  • Which of the two lintel dialogs to use for a brick ledge. Lesson 32 teaches the brick ledge through Pilaster / Lintel Details. Nothing checked for this lesson compared the two for that job.

  • More than three lintels in this dialog. It has three rows.

  • Calc and Help were not exercised.

  • Metric. This lesson was run in imperial units only.

Watch the lesson

The video follows Try it on AAA039 on a plain copy of AAA039 (no other features). On that run the title block went from 126.2 to 127.5 KIPS and from 31.2 to 31.5 Cu. Yd. It does not reopen the drawing.
